School Safety

With the start of the school year approaching it is a good time to review basic safety rules with your children. Some basic safety guidelines to follow:

  • Have a special code word with your young children that can be used by someone you send to pick your child up in an emergency. Explain to your child not to share this code word with anyone. Also let them know in case of an emergency if you send someone to pick them up that the person will give them the code word. If the person does not know the code word then your child should not go with them.
  • Review your emergency contact plan with them including who they should call (with numbers) in case they cannot reach you.
  • Review basic safety guidelines with them for crossing the street, waiting for the bus and/or walking home. The first day of school tends to be hectic and small reminders go a long way towards making your child safe.
  • Review the rules for after school, I find a reminder note in their backpack or on the refrigerator (everyone is hungry after school) works well.
  • Do not hesitate to check in with them during the transition back to school.
